both heading for a win !
- Gary of the Game and the Open
while Alex eventually
top-scored Division 2, not bad
since this tournament last year
was his first adult tournament
and now has the cudos of playing
board 1 - and against Gary Lane !

the last game of the tournament kept
us on edge, Michael and Victor try
their hardest to find a win
- but a draw sometimes is a draw no
matter how closely you look

This is a Myer Tan Chess Grand Prix 2007 event - a third weekender (and if you include the City of Sydney which took up two weekends this year in quick succession (for NSW players at any rate), All players had been battle-hardened.

` A rather mystifyingly low turn-out, but all very keen and out for blood.

Round 1 went mostly as ratings expected - except for Gary Losh overcoming a 200 point deficit against Victor and a mighty Tussle between Radisav and the number 2 seed in extra time with promoted Queens flying every which way until hostilities ran out of promise and a draw agreed. Alex Biucu was struggling in a fairly lost position and down to his last minute when he spied a loose piece and proved that no position is blunder-proof.

Round 2 Boards 2 and 3 drew leaving Gary (Lane) just in front even at this early stage

Round 3

Round 4 Back to the drawing board for Graeme (all 3 fighting draws were to higher rated opponents and one who was in form enough to snare a draw with the NSW Country Champion), Graeme was one of the few who remained unscathed (well, lossless then) on Day 1 the other(s) being Gary and Paul - day 2 promised to be interesting indeed.

Day 2 - the storm builds
Round 5 Both fresh after a good night's rest Seeds 1 and 2 faced off - with Gary emerging with the full point.

This is only the second round so far that contained only the single draw - the others having two or three - indeed that game could have ended if the draw offer had been heard earlier - so if you offer a draw speak up, don't be shy. A round where no-one gave any quarter led to Gary out in front with a perfect score followed by a pack of five ( 5 !! ) on 3½ and a further 2 only half a point behind that group.

Round 6 Wins by both Gary, who continued his winning way, and Paul edged into clear 2nd - though he had a small determined posse at his heels. Now it seemed as if the battleground was third place, apart from the various divisional prizes.

Round 7 In the finale three shared third place - Paul finished a point ahead of them but the standout ws of course Gary Lane with a score that would be hard to improve upon ( 7 from 7 played).

Clear Winner of the Seond Division was Alex Mehan with Mike Weltner, Graeme Deacon, George Smit equal second

Winners of the Open Division were Gary Lane First, Paul Broekhuyse Second and Richard Eccles; Ben Ryan; Trent Parker all equal third (Trent and Ben coming from the lower division to snare their places.

All-in-all a successful tournament thanks to The Toukley RSL management and support staff who supplied a lovely room (made even more spacious by the low numbers, the room could have easily catered for triple the number (as it has in the past) and ensured our refrehments were always at hand. Many thanks also to ACE for providing Sets, Boards and clocks, and not least the players who played hard, uncompromising chess and in the spirit of the sportsmen they are.

before we get over-excited - the above guesstimates are SwissPerfect calculations based upon pre-glicko days, I bumped the multiplier up to 25 but it doesn't take RD into account etc etc
